Zachary Wong Wai-yin

Zachary Wong is one of Hong Kong's best known elected representatives and leading social workers. Twice elected to the Legislative Council, he is a member of a number of bodies ranging from transport to crime issues. A core member of the Democratic Party, Mr. Wong will contest the May 24 Legislative Council elections as a candidate for the New Territories West district.

Education and Background:

Born in 1957, Mr. Wong was educated in Hong Kong. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree, but while studying he became increasingly involved in community services, participating

in volunteer work, helping the elderly and counselling students. His experiences and commitment to the community made him determined to become a social worker.

Career:

While in Yuen Long as a social worker, Zachary Wong became aware of the area's pressing problems, but realised the best hope for helping the people of the area was to run for the District Board, which he did in 1988. He has been a District Board Member in Yuen Long since then and has worked full-time as an elected representative since 1994. In 1991, Zachary Wong was elected to the Legislative Council in Hong Kong first-ever democratic elections (his seat was one of only 18 to be elected at that time). Mr. Wong was soundly re-elected to the legislature in 1995, but was ousted from the legislature by Beijing along with his fellow Democratic Party colleagues on July 1, 1997.

Mr. Wong was also a long-time member (since 1986) of Meeting Point, Hong Kong's first political pressure group and he was later a founding member of the Democratic Party. He is the Party's Spokesperson on Transport Policy and a Central Committee Member.

Community Service:

Mr. Wong is a member and a leader in a large number of statutory bodies, including the Fight Crime Committee (Yuen Long), the Civil Education Committee, the Long Ping Estate (Yuen Long) Housing Management Advisory Committee, and the ICAC Community Liaison Citizen Advisory Committee.

Personal:

Zachary Wong is single and lives in Yuen Long.
