Fred Li Wah-ming is a core member of the Democratic Party - the largest and most popular political party in Hong Kong. A seasoned public official, Mr. Li was one of the territory's first elected representatives: he won a District Board seat in 1985 and went on to serve two terms in the Legislative Council. Mr. Li is known for his efforts to assist the general public and his commitment to the preservation of freedom and way of life in Hong Kong. Education and Background: Mr. Li was born in Hong Kong and completed his higher education abroad in Canada. He received his Bachelor's degree at the University of Waterloo and went on to earn a master's degree in social work at the University of Toronto. Much of Mr. Li's work has been dedicated to social welfare. A member of the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for the Mentally Handicapped, he is also a member of the Estate Agent Authority and has been a part of the Council and Court of the Hong Kong Baptist University since 1992. Political Career: Mr. Li was elected to the Kwun Tong District Board in 1985. In 1991,
Mr. Li won a seat in the Legislative Council, representing the Kowloon
Southeast constituency. He was re-elected in 1995, in a race run against
a strong pro-Beijing candidate which was regarded as a key test for the
pro-democracy Mr. Li has been a member of the Urban Council for the Kwun Tong South constituency since 1991. Since 1996, he has been a member of the Advisory Committee on Corruption, which is part of the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Fred Li was a member of Meeting Point, Hong Kong's first pro-democracy pressure group. He is a member of the Central Standing Committee of the Democratic Party and serves as its spokesperson for Social Welfare. Personal: Mr. Li is married and has one child.
